X announces plans for video and audio calls

Elon Musk has announced that video and audio calls are coming to X, formerly known as Twitter.

The billionaire said that the upcoming feature will work on iOS, Android, Mac and PC with “no phone number needed”.

“X is the effective global address book,” he added.

Musk’s announcement follows the July rebranding of Twitter to X, with reports the social media platform’s blue bird icon is expected to eventually be phased out completely.

Commenting on the new branding, Twitter chief executive Linda Yaccarino, who was appointed to the role in May, posted a lengthy twitter thread at the time about what the new ‘X’ logo would mean.

“There’s absolutely no limit to this transformation,” she said. “X will be the platform that can deliver, well...everything.”

She continued: “X is the future state of unlimited interactivity. Centred in audio, video, messaging, payments/banking – creating a global marketplace for ideas, goods, services, and opportunities. Powered by AI, X will connect us all in ways we’re just beginning to imagine.”
